Yay a travel post! My previous travel posts, such as Vienna and Dublin have just consisted of a bunch of photos that I’ve taken on holiday without much detail as to what we actually did or where we went. So I’ve decided for this post about Mull, I’ll go more in depth and actually tell you why you should go.
So just over a year ago, I travelled to the Isle of Mull with Cam and his family for a couple of days to just get away for a bit. Some of you may ask “where the heck is Mull?”, don’t worry – I asked the same thing. Mull is an island off the west coast of Scotland, here it is on a map:
I had no idea what was in Mull or what there was to do so I didn’t really know what to expect – just that it was an island off the coast of Scotland and we were going in September, so it was probably going to be cold and wet. I was right. Anyway, here are five reasons you should visit Mull at some point:
Reasons You Should Visit The Isle of Mull #1: Mull is bloody gorgeous
As you can see, some of the views we had were amazing. Especially from the beaches, it didn’t even feel like we were in Scotland! The good thing about Mull is that it’s a small island so you can basically drive around it in a day – which I feel like we came pretty close to doing. Some of my favourites were the beach we stayed at on our first couple of nights, Calgary Bay, an amazing waterfall we found while driving around, and two old & abandoned boats just sitting on the shore – sadly there was no treasure left inside, just an empty can of Tennents.
Reasons You Should Visit The Isle of Mull #2: Tobermory
If you’re around my age and you grew up in the UK, you might remember a show called Balamory. Well, this is where it was filmed. You might recognise the colourful houses and start singing the theme song – I did that too. We only spent an hour or two in Tobermory as we just stopped by on our way to Calgary Bay but we had a good wander round and took pictures of the pretty colourful houses. I also had the best grapefruit ice cream ever and I still think about it every now and then.
Reasons You Should Visit The Isle Of Mull #3: You can day trip to Iona
We took the ferry over to Iona for a quick day trip and did a lot of walking towards one end of the island to see the white sand beaches and clear water. It was such a pretty place and well worth the trek to get there. Iona is a tiny little island with not many residents so there’s not an awful lot to do, but if you’re visiting Mull anyway, you’d be as well popping over to Iona for a quick look and to cross off another Scottish island.
Reasons You Should Visit The Isle Of Mull #4: The wildlife
Mull is known for its wildlife and is home to animals such as whales and dolphins, eagles, seals and deer. While we were there we only really came close to highland cows and some sheep, but we did manage to do some otter spotting in the evenings as well.
Reasons You Should Visit The Isle of Mull #5: The sunsets
While we were on Mull, I saw some of the prettiest sunsets I’ve ever seen. Sidenote – these sunset photos are the only photos I didn’t edit for this post, let that sink in for a sec. I think most nights the weather was good enough that we got a clear sky to watch the sun go down. One of my fondest memories though, will always be chasing a sunset around the island and finally finding an amazing viewpoint next to a waterfall. My wellies got stuck in the mud while doing so, but it was well worth it.
